Only 5 days to go until I run 5 k, fundraising for Breast Cancer Research and Patient Support Services with the Chicks in Pink in Brisbane. Mucho excited!
You can read more about the charity here http://www.everydayhero.com.au/runkeetarun
and if you are so inclined you can donate too! (all donations in AUS are tax deductible and the website is fullt secure for online donations).
Doing Doing Doing!
There is not much action going on this blog at the moment… its just that there is soooo much to do this month! I run a 5 k event this sunday, fundraising for breast cancer research and patient support services, so I have been training for that (I havent run 5 k is over 10 years! so it feels amazing to be making progress and running further and faster each week).
THEN I have my Practical Sessions for the Personal Training course to complete. I had my first one this morning with the most awesomest dude ever! I think I lucked out and got the best Mentor - this guy has been training clients for over 25 years, and is still so passionate about it… and teaching it! He is an ex-ballerina, surf lifesaving, CPR teaching, Boxing, Mad Weights Orchestrator Walking Triangle Guru! He even invited me to stay after my practical hours are up and just keep shadowing him to learn more…yeewwwwww! Only con is the 3:30 am wake up call!!! 6am was hard enough! Thank god it is only twice a week …. I might just die of bleeding eyeball tiredness doing that plus the study and full time job!
PLUS there is the house hunting/house cleaning/packing up house/ unpacking house this month too. OMFFFFFFGGGGG! Just hope I find a place that has enough room for decent Pilates and Weights Sessions. *hopeing and wishin!*
AND then there is wedding (not mine thankyou god!), a birthday, a going away party, Winery tour, arrggghhhhhh!!!
In other news dinner tonight was spiffy quick and quiet delish!

Wholemeal Nan Bread as a Pizza Base with 1/2 tsp of Mango Chutney (it gives a good tang!) and 1/2 tsp tomato paste smeared across base. Then topped with Red Onion, Grilled Zucchini, Fresh Basil Leaves, and 1 tblsp of Vegetarian Nimbin Cheese. Heat in Oven on High Heat until Cheese is browning (or pull it out like me early because you are sttaaarrrrvvvinggggg!!!) Nicely plated up with leftover topping and sundried tomatoes.
I just spent every waking moment possible over the last 4 days reading this! What a great read! I could not put it down, found it to be the perfect inspiration (I am currently training for my first 5 k event in 10 years…no marathon..but hey, its a start!), and recommend it to anyone who loves the odd run, and/or has an interest in sports/adventure/evolution/human interest stories.
You can get it on Amazon Books, or at Christopher McDougall’s website, here.
“Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.
Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence. With the help of Caballo Blanco, a mysterious loner who lives among the tribe, the author was able not only to uncover the secrets of the Tarahumara but also to find his own inner ultra-athlete, as he trained for the challenge of a lifetime: a fifty-mile race through the heart of Tarahumara country pitting the tribe against an odd band of Americans, including a star ultramarathoner, a beautiful young surfer, and a barefoot wonder.
With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultrarunners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to the climactic race in the Copper Canyons. Born to Run is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run”

Women and their Bodies. (its time to start thinking like a man)
Stumbled upon this article on theage.com.au and felt the need to share:

Time to Start Thinking Like a Man
Last week I was at the beach waiting in line for a smoothie and couldn’t help eavesdrop on the conversation that was happening in front of me. Two thirty-something men – lets call them Macca and Charlie – were discussing women. More accurately they were discussing women waking past the shop in their swimming costumes.
Here’s where the story stops being predictable and becomes interesting. The conversation was wolf-whistle free. No put downs, nothing rude, lewd – these blokes were complimentary and enthusiastic in their appraisals. What I found most fascinating was that they uttered not one single word about size or weight. It didn’t even come in to it. They were genuinely focused on the good bits – as far as they could see (and I could hear), when it comes to women in cossies there are only good bits.
Three things I learnt:
1. Men don’t see size in the same way women do. A range of body types (6-16) walked past Macca and Charlie but they talked about each women in exactly the same way – give or take a compliment – and it had nothing to do with dress size and everything to do with the bits that filled it.
2. Men love looking at women. Admiring women. Talking about women. Being with women. This can be done without leering, jeering, grunts or clicks. That’s a stereotype we need to move on from.
3. Men like bits that jiggle and wiggle. They don’t call it cellulite or fat. I’m not sure they even see it. Curvy/round/flat/small/skinny doesn’t seem to be all that important.
I was genuinely disappointed when their drinks arrived. I could have listened to them all day. It was strangely uplifting. Macca and Charlie made me feel great. About everything. Being a woman. Men. My body. Mankind…
By contrast five days later back at the same smoothie shack, I listened to a conversation* between two women – lets call them Kylie and Rachel. They had an almost identical exchange to the men – talking about bodies in swimsuits - except it was full of negativity and ultimately self-doubt.
Three things I already know:
1. Women talk in terms of size all the time – and tend to notice it ahead of other attributes.
2. Women often see faults before any of the good bits. No more so than when critiquing themselves.
3. Women feel guilty talking trash about other women. After five minutes of bitchy comments, Rachel and Kylie repented by putting the boot into their own bodies.
I couldn’t wait to get away. I felt like I needed a shower. Their conversation was predictable and depressing. Why do we do this to ourselves? Still. With all that we know. These everyday exchanges at the local shop put a highlighter pen through the fact that when it comes to women and self esteem, we are still our own worst enemies.
This column is full of generalisms. I could have stumbled upon the world’s nicest men and two of the most insecure women this side of Bondi but experience tells me that this type of conversation is average and going on all over town. Everyday.
Walking back to my towel with my daughters it occurred to me how much better women would feel about their bodies if they looked at them through the eyes of a man. I’m certain that if I had Charlie and Macca sitting on my shoulder instead of Rachel and Kylie I would be in much better spiritual shape.
So I’m giving it a go. That’s my new year’s resolution. After all, positive body image starts with positive thoughts. It’s as simple and as difficult as that.

So in order to build a little routine around a daily yoga practice, I have promised myself that I will wake up just a little bit earlier each morning in order to fit in five sun salutations, every day for the next 30 days. Today was day one…and it was a lovely addition to the warm up before my 5 k jog. Feeling the Yoga-Luvin-Euphoric-Running vibes right now!
Highly recommended to kickstart the day… and I think it is even mild enough to do on rest days but still enough to kill off any lethargy.
